EU rulings threaten UK vegetable crops
Sources: Caroline Davies, The Observer – January 4, 2009
UK vegetable growers are bracing for major quality and yield losses in carrot, potato, onion and parsnip crops when EU ministers slash the use of permitted plant protectants on food crops later this month.
The ruling will ban plant protection products that MIGHT have adverse effects on human health.
Over 45 actives will be discontinued, including the Group C fungicides, Currently, these products are not considered to have a significant impact on human health.
The UK – Pesticides Safety Directorate warns the ban will cut UK food production without securing meaningful benefits for consumer health or the environment.
