Updated: 30/10/2009

Victorian Agriculture Minister, Joe Helper has launched the Horticulture Industry Network – HIN, a joint initiative of the Victorian Department of Primary Industries and Victorian Horticulture Associations.

The initiative sees the return of Vegetable Industry Development Officers -IDO’s, to Victoria, a role valued by growers that had been provided through Horticulture Australia till July this year.

This is a major step towards ensuring producers have ready access to targeted and relevant support services, said Mr Helper.

Farm Services executive director Ron Harris said the DPI would continue to provide services in biosecurity, climate change, drought response and work with the associations and their IDOs to increase their efficiency and effectiveness.

“An advisory committee, made up of all industry associations, will meet twice a year to review network activities and make recommendations for ongoing work,” he said.

“The network will enable us to provide more targeted services to horticultural producers and encourage greater collaboration between industry associations,” said Mr Harris.

New VGA Victoria IDO, Ken Orr joined VGA President Luis Gazzola, Executive Officer Tony Imeson and others at the event.
