Composts for Healthy Soils

The Westernport Catchment Landcare Network recently hosted a ‘Soils and Composts’ Field Day at the Kooweerup property of VGA member Maurie Cafra.

The event included a presentation of the findings of a Landcare project studying the effects of composts on soil carbon & pH.

Maurie shared his approach to organic farming which included Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Maurie uses crop scouting, crop rotation, and green crop management to encourage beneficial insects to control crop pests.

One of the notable features at Maurie Cafra’s farm is his commitment to the production of compost to foster the microbiological health of his soils and provide nutrients to crops.

Maurie described how microbial activity is managed during composting
and the importance of getting the right Carbon to Nitrogen ratio in the compost.

Locally available source materials for composting included municipal prunings, egg shell waste, animal manures, wood chips, straw, packing shed waste plus trace elements as required.

Compost is set out in windrows 2m wide X 1.5m high. A compost turner mixes the material, adds water as needed and then turns the windrow to maintain optimum temperature for composting.
