Worker dies in Werribee farm accident

Updated: 26/11/2009

A man died after being run over by the trailer of a reversing tractor at a Werribee vegetable farm on Monday.

It is understood the trailer, loaded with cabbages, was being reversed into a loading dock.

WorkSafe’s Executive Director, John Merritt, said today’s incident sends a powerful message to all employers and workers.

“Do everything humanly possible
to prevent
incidents like this happening.”

Mr Merritt said the incident was a warning to other industries where a busy pre-Christmas period was looming.

“This is a period where high risks abound. The last thing anyone needs at a busy time is to deal with a preventable crisis.”

Most vegetable growers are eligible for a FREE and independent Workplace Risk Evaluation … a way to manage your safety obligations in a step by step way.
