From 1 September 2025, machetes will be classified as a prohibited weapon under Victoria’s Control of Weapons laws. This means it will be illegal to buy, sell, use, carry or possess a machete in Victoria unless you fall under an approved exemption.

Agriculture Industry Exemption

If you’re a farmer, horticultural worker, apprentice or student using a machete for genuine agricultural tasks (such as harvesting, sapling maintenance or crop work), you do not need to apply an automatic exemption applies.

However, strict conditions must be followed:

• Machetes must be stored securely and kept out of reach from unauthorised people.

• When travelling or in public for work, the machete must be concealed and secure.

• They cannot be used for recreational purposes or kept in vehicles unless going to/from a work site.

 Misuse or non-compliance can lead to fines over $47,000 or up to 2 years in prison.

You may be asked to show evidence of eligibility (e.g. ABN, payslip, enrolment details).
