Strengthening Our Partnership with Second Bite Fare Share

Over the past few years, AUSVEG VIC has been proud to support Fare Share in their mission to reduce food waste and feed Australians in need. We’ve worked closely with our members to facilitate donations of surplus produce through the Melbourne Market, ensuring that high-quality, fresh vegetables that might otherwise go to waste are redirected to those who need them most. In addition, we’ve been actively involved in helping establish Fare Share’s new farm, which will soon be in full production, growing fresh produce specifically for use in their state-of-the-art kitchens.

With the recent merger of Second Bite and Fare Share in July 2024, the process of donating surplus crops has become even smoother and more efficient. This merger combines Second Bite’s extensive supply chain and logistics expertise with Fare Share’s ability to transform rescued food into nutritious, ready-made meals. Together, they provide a powerful, unified solution that not only increases the volume of food reaching communities but also ensures it’s directed where it’s needed most.

In 2024 alone:

  • 2.3 million ready-made meals were prepared in Fare Share’s kitchens.
  • 48.5 million meals were distributed through Second Bite’s extensive network of over 1,000 charity partners.
  • 25.7 million kilograms of food were rescued from going to landfill.

With these expanded capabilities and streamlined processes, it’s now easier than ever for Victorian growers to contribute by donating surplus produce through the Melbourne Market or directly.
