Vale – Norm Hawkes

Many vegetable growers will fondly remember former VGA Vice President and Life Member Norm Hawkes, who passed away on the 26th October 2009, aged 83.

Norm was born and raised on the family farm at Mordialloc, the fourth generation to work the same land.

After a long and successful career, Norm ‘retired’ some 40 years ago to Perry Bridge on Lake Wellington near Sale.

Growing and selling vegetables was a life-long passion which Norm continued in retirement, selling his home-grown potatoes and carrots at local Farmers Markets.

Norm was a great supporter of vegetable research, from the early work with kerosene blends to control weeds in young carrots, through to trials with the more selective herbicides.

Norm will be well remembered for his love of work, friends and family and his lifelong connection with the vegetable industry.

Farewell Norm.
