Vale – Ken Marriott

We sadly mark the passing of VGA Life Member Ken Marriott, remembered as a born leader,” a colossus of a man, a man of integrity, straightforwardness, simplicity, honesty and dignity, with a no nonsense – no fuss attitude“.

Ken applied much of his considerable energy and talents to the benefit of others, working hard for his family and all Victorian vegetable growers, we have much to be grateful for.

Some of Kens’ many contributions include:

  • Vice-President of the Australian Vegetable Growers’ Federation, and Chairman of the Onion Marketing Board.
  • 18 years as Councillor of the City of Springvale, twice elected Mayor.
  • 15 years as a Commissioner of the MMBW.
  • Founding President of the Springvale Benevolent Society and active in several other community and sporting clubs.

Ken was born and raised on his father’s market garden at Bentleigh before working his own farm at Heatherton from 1955 till 1971.

“You can learn if you listen”

In “retirement”, Ken worked at the Wholesale Market 3 days/week from 5 am till midday for the VGA. Ken also helped as a vendor for many grower members whilst they were absent on holidays or because of Illness.

“I’ll pick you up … I’ll take you there”

Memories of Ken as a kind, good natured, generous and hardworking man will remain with us forever.

“ A life well lived ” – Adieu   Ken
